The Montana Historical Society has announced that Pretty Shield, an Apsáalooke (Crow) medicine woman, and I.D. O’Donnell, an agricultural leader and irrigation advocate, will be inducted into the Gallery of Outstanding Montanans at the State Capitol Building on Thursday, March 6.

The ceremony will begin at noon in the Capitol Rotunda, with remarks from Lieutenant Governor Kristen Juras, Montana Historical Society Director Molly Kruckenberg, along with friends and family. Members of the public are invited to attend.

The Gallery, created by the State Legislature in 1979, recognizes citizens of Montana who have made significant contributions in their respective fields while embodying the unique spirit of the state.

O’Donnell (1860-1948) dedicated his life to helping farmers modernize their operations, promoting crops like alfalfa and sugar beets, and establishing efficient irrigation methods on a national level.

Pretty Shield (1856-1944) was committed to preserving her people’s culture, imparting Apsáalooke values, knowledge, and practices to future generations. She taught her community about Apsáalooke culture, ensuring the transmission of vital skills and knowledge.

Following the induction, panels featuring photographs and biographical details of O’Donnell and Pretty Shield will be installed in the gallery at the Capitol, which connects the Secretary of State’s office to the Rotunda.
