HELENA, Mont. — Montana’s business landscape continued its robust growth in 2025, with more than 5,100 new business registrations filed with the Secretary of State’s Office in February, according to the Montana Business Economic Report.
The new year began with over 6,000 new business registrations filed in January.

“Montanans are demonstrating remarkable entrepreneurial spirit, and our office is dedicated to supporting them every step of the way,” said Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen. “We’re committed to making Montana the best place to start and grow a business.”
Montana had another record-breaking year of new business creation in 2024, with nearly 64,000 registrations, marking the fourth consecutive year of record growth. The trend underscores the state’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly climate.
Under Secretary Jacobsen’s leadership, the cost of registering new businesses in Montana was cut in half, and several other related fees were eliminated. Additionally, the annual report filing fee was waived in 2024 and 2025, resulting in millions of dollars in savings for Montana businesses.
The Secretary of State’s Office has also enhanced efficiencies through its online business filing system, providing Montana businesses with 24/7 access to registrations, filings, and documents.
Earlier this week, Secretary Jacobsen thanked President Trump for repealing confusing and burdensome regulations targeting small businesses. Secretary Jacobsen and colleagues nationwide had previously urged President Trump to eliminate the Biden Administration’s mandate.
“I’m pleased that President Trump acknowledged my concerns on behalf of Montana’s small businesses,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “We are simplifying processes and removing unnecessary regulations to make it easier than ever to do business in Montana.”
