HELENA, Mont. — Montana has emerged as the leading state for startup success, ranking first by Entrepreneur in startup density, which measures startups per 100,000 people, and featuring the highest 10-year survival rate for these businesses.

The state has been recognized for its entrepreneurial ecosystem, which supports more than 4,800 startups, according to the report. This has resulted in a startup opportunity score of 9.55, the highest among states, with 41 percent of these businesses surviving over a decade. Other states that performed well include Oregon, Nevada, Utah, and Florida.

Governor Greg Gianforte touted the ranking Friday saying that his administration has been prioritizing making Montana a startup-friendly destination.

“As an entrepreneur, I know firsthand the joys and challenges of starting and growing a business,” Gov. Gianforte said. “With my experience, I am working every day as governor to make government more efficient and responsive to Montanans looking to invest in their dreams and in the Treasure State.”

The evaluation, which relied on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau, highlights Montana’s robust environment for new enterprises. This favorable business climate is reflected in the burgeoning startup culture, supported by state policies that encourage economic growth and innovation.

The rankings were determined by business travel experts at Booking.com for Business and showcases the state’s progress under current initiatives to foster both economic development and startup success.
