HELENA, Mont. — The trend of increasing business registrations in Montana continues with over 18,000 new businesses filed in the first three months of 2025, including about 6,600 in March alone. This sets a promising trajectory for the remainder of the year and is a reflection of the state’s ongoing commitment to cultivate a business-friendly environment.
Over the first quarter, the numbers build on the strong start of the year, which saw more than 5,100 business registrations in February. This early-year momentum highlights a continuous increase in entrepreneurial activities, with over 6,000 businesses registering in January 2025.
Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen emphasized the positive impact of these trends on the local economy. “From the Hi-Line to the Badlands, Montanans are beginning their business dreams by registering here at the Secretary of State’s Office,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “We’re honored to support their journey by making it simpler and less expensive to get their business up and running.”
Secretary Jacobsen said her office has focused on making it less burdensome for entrepreneurs by cutting registration fees in half and waiving annual report filing fees for 2024 and 2025, resulting in welcome financial relief for local businesses. Jacobsen also credited her office’s efforts to and updated online business filing system that offer 24/7 access to common business startup needs like filing registrations for new businesses and DBAs.
As the number of business registrations in Montana continues to rise, these collective efforts affirm Montana’s dedication to fostering a robust economic climate where businesses thrive. “Thank you for doing business in Montana!” echoes as a welcoming call to all current and prospective business owners exploring opportunities in the state.
