BILLINGS, Mont. — A Minnesota man with a federal conviction for receipt of child pornography was sentenced to 16 months in prison Tuesday for failing to register as a sex offender after traveling to Montana in November 2023.
Jeremiah Robert Wiberg, 42, pleaded guilty in March to one count of failure to register as a sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). U.S. District Judge Susan P. Watters also sentenced Wiberg to five years of supervised release following his incarceration.
According to court documents, Wiberg has been required to register as a sex offender since his 2007 federal conviction for receipt of child pornography. He had been on federal supervised release for eight years and was revoked from supervision multiple times before his latest violation.
Timeline of Events
Wiberg was released from federal prison in Louisiana on November 8, 2023, and traveled to Billings the same day according to his Bureau of Prisons travel itinerary. However, he failed to check in with U.S. Probation or register under SORNA upon his arrival in Montana.
Court records show Wiberg remained in Montana for several weeks, traveling to Roundup before leaving the state. He never registered as required by federal law during his time in Montana.
On December 27, 2023, law enforcement received information that Wiberg was staying in Minnesota. He was subsequently located at a VFW in Forest Lake, Minnesota, and arrested on a federal warrant for violating his supervised release. Authorities found he had not registered in Minnesota either.
Multi-Agency Investigation
The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana. The investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including:
- Federal Bureau of Investigation
- U.S. Marshals Service
- U.S. Probation Office
- Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office
- Montana Division of Criminal Investigation
U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme announced the sentencing, emphasizing the importance of sex offender registration requirements in protecting public safety.
