HELENA, Mont. — Montana’s business registration boom extended into its fourth consecutive month above 6,000 new filings, with Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen announcing that more than 6,200 new businesses registered with her office in June, according to the Montana Business Economic Report.
The sustained growth pattern continues a trend Western Montana News has been tracking throughout 2025, with the state posting over 6,000 registrations in January, 5,100 in February, 6,600 in March, and 6,500 in May.
“Montana remains open for business,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “Our pro-business policies continue to get government out of the way and let businesses thrive. I’m proud to support Main Street in Montana!”
Record-Breaking Trajectory
With almost 38,000 new business registrations filed through the year’s first six months, Montana is on pace to surpass its 2024 record of nearly 64,000 new business registrations.
Under Secretary Jacobsen’s leadership, Montana has posted record new business registration numbers in each of the past four years, with 2024 seeing nearly 64,000 new businesses register with the state.
Jacobsen Cites Policy Reforms
According to Jacobsen’s office, the growth in business formation reflects several pro-business reforms implemented over the past four years:
- Fee reductions: Registration fees cut in half for new Montana businesses
- Eliminated fees: Several other business-related fees removed entirely
- Waived annual reports: Filing fees waived for 2024 and 2025, with additional waivers planned for 2026 and 2027, saving millions of dollars for businesses statewide
- Enhanced online services: 24/7 access to filing and document retrieval through the office’s online portal
Broader Business Advocacy
Beyond state-level reforms, Jacobsen has advocated for businesses at the national level, urging President Trump to repeal what she characterized as the Biden Administration’s “burdensome small business mandates” and celebrating the suspension of Corporate Transparency Act enforcement.
Jacobsen’s office also took action against an out-of-state organization that was sending what the office characterized as deceptive mailings to Montana businesses.
“Congratulations to all the new businesses embarking on this exciting journey,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “Your passion and dedication will not only create jobs, but enrich our Montana communities, and we’re proud to support you on your journey. Thank you for doing business in Montana!”
