HELENA — Governor Greg Gianforte is accepting applications and nominations to fill two new district court positions in Yellowstone County, his office announced Monday.
The Montana Supreme Court’s chief justice notified Gianforte of the vacancies in the Thirteenth Judicial District on July 18. The positions were created earlier this year when the Legislature passed House Bill 913, which increased the number of judges for Yellowstone County from eight to ten.
Any lawyer in good standing who meets the legal qualifications for district court judge may apply or be nominated for the positions.
Application Process
Applications are available at nominatejudges.mt.gov and must be submitted both electronically and in hard copy by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
All applications will be made public and considered for appointment to either judicial seat.
The public will have the opportunity to submit letters of support or comments about applicants through the same website from Aug. 27 through Sept. 26. Applicants must receive at least three letters of support to be considered for appointment by the governor.
The Thirteenth Judicial District covers Yellowstone County, Montana’s most populous county and home to Billings.
