BILLINGS — Intermountain Health broke ground on Montana’s first large medical supply warehouse, a project that will create 70 jobs in Billings and employ nearly 100 tradespeople during construction.

The Montana Consolidated Services Center, located off Elysian Road south of Interstate 90, is expected to open in late 2026 and will include more than 30 new positions offering competitive wages, health benefits and career development pathways.

“Construction of the CSC will employ nearly 100 tradespeople,” according to Intermountain Health. “Once operational, the center will create 70 jobs in Billings, including more than 30 new positions.”

The facility will serve as a centralized hub for warehouse and supply distribution, laundry services, and transportation operations across the region. The center is expected to handle more than 500,000 medical supply items annually, shipping to hospitals and clinics throughout Montana.

“For decades, hospitals in Billings, Butte, Miles City, and beyond have relied on supplies shipped from out of state, over 500 miles away. In winter, that distance becomes a real barrier,” said Lee Boyles, president of St. Vincent Regional Hospital and the Montana-Wyoming market of Intermountain Health. “For the first time, critical supplies will be stored right here in Montana, with local courier teams delivering them where and when they’re needed.”

The transportation network will cover approximately 325,000 miles annually, making 25,000 stops to deliver medical supplies, linens, laboratory specimens, equipment and medications to healthcare facilities across the state.

Beyond distribution, the center will provide laundry services to Intermountain Health facilities with goals of improving quality and reducing costs. The facility will play a critical role in ensuring supply continuity during emergencies.

“This isn’t just logistics, it’s resilience and safety,” Boyles said.

The warehouse groundbreaking represents one of several major investments Intermountain Health is making in the Billings community. In June, the health system began construction on a replacement for St. Vincent Regional Hospital, a project that will create 1,200 construction jobs.

The new hospital will be a 14-floor, 737,000-square-foot facility at 27th Street and 12th Avenue North, just east of the current hospital building. Construction is expected to take four years and be completed in 2029.
