MISSOULA — The Montana Digital Academy announced Tuesday the launch of the Frontier Learning Lab, a statewide initiative designed to help Montana schools integrate artificial intelligence, extended reality and other emerging technologies into their classrooms.

The program, funded by the 2025 Montana Legislature, aims to equip educators and students with the skills and ethical frameworks needed to navigate rapidly evolving digital technology.

“This isn’t about flashy tech or trends,” said Dr. Jason Neiffer, executive director of MTDA. “It’s about putting practical, powerful tools into the hands of educators who want to prepare students not just for what’s now, but for what’s next.”

The Frontier Learning Lab offers several key components to support Montana educators:

  • A flexible, year-round professional learning model with regional and statewide workshops, credentialing programs, webinars and peer-to-peer support
  • A first-of-its-kind “AI Help Desk” to support K-12 teachers, university faculty and administrators with just-in-time answers
  • A curated directory of vetted AI, virtual reality and augmented reality tools aligned with classroom needs, student safety and accessibility

According to MTDA, the organization will partner with districts across Montana to pilot immersive learning experiences, co-design implementation strategies and scale innovations that enhance student engagement and deepen learning outcomes.

The initiative comes as schools nationwide grapple with how to effectively incorporate rapidly advancing AI and immersive technology tools into education while maintaining student safety and pedagogical quality.

“The goal isn’t to prescribe a one-size-fits-all solution,” Neiffer said. “We’re here to collaborate with schools, teachers, and communities to make sure Montana students are ready for the frontier ahead.”

Educators interested in learning more can visit mtda.org/FLL or contact the AI help desk at [email protected]. The lab will document its findings at Field Notes from the Frontier Learning Lab, available at frontierlearninglab.substack.com.

Montana Digital Academy, created by the 2009 Legislature, serves as Montana’s state virtual school, providing supplemental instructional services to students across the state through their local public schools. The organization is located at the Phyllis J. Washington College on the University of Montana campus.
