DAYTON — Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will begin a highway widening project on US Highway 93 next week to accommodate increased traffic to a new fishing access site on Flathead Lake.
The project, scheduled to start Monday, will install a left-hand turn lane at the intersection of US 93 and Montibello Lane, just north of Dayton at mile marker 84. The work is being conducted in partnership with the Montana Department of Transportation and C3 Energy Partners.
“The purpose of this project is to widen the highway, construct a left-hand turn lane at the intersection of US 93 and Montibello Lane, and reconstruct the existing Montibello Lane approach to accommodate increased traffic entering the forthcoming Conclow Fishing Access Site,” according to FWP’s press release.
The highway improvements include widening the roadway, installing asphalt pavement on widened sections, centerline rumble strips, seal and cover, striping and signage. Construction crews will work Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. throughout August, weather and unforeseen factors permitting.
Motorists can expect two-way traffic, reduced speeds and traffic lights during construction, with minimal delays anticipated for construction vehicles crossing the highway. FWP advises drivers to follow all posted signage and watch for workers.
The road work is designed to support the new Conclow Fishing Access Site, formerly known as Montebello FAS, which will provide public access to Flathead Lake. Construction on the fishing access site itself is scheduled to begin in fall, following completion of the highway project.
The Conclow site is the second new fishing access facility to open in the Flathead area this summer. FWP opened the new Sportsman’s Bridge Fishing Access Site near Bigfork on Saturday, replacing a decades-old facility with an 18-acre site featuring expanded parking and a concrete boat ramp.
The fishing access site development represents an expansion of public recreation opportunities on Flathead Lake, one of Montana’s premier fishing destinations.
