HELENA, MT — Montana homeowners can begin applying for property tax rebates of up to $400 starting Friday, August 15, but must submit applications by October 1 to receive the relief payments.
The rebate program, established through Senate Bill 542, provides one-time relief for property taxes paid in 2024 to eligible Montana homeowners who owned and lived in their primary residence for at least seven months during that year. The rebate program terminates June 30, 2026.
“Recognizing the burden of rising property taxes, we worked with the Legislature to deliver permanent and meaningful property tax relief,” Governor Greg Gianforte said. “I encourage all eligible Montana homeowners to visit getmyrebate.mt.gov starting August 15 to claim a rebate before the application period closes on October 1.”
Application Requirements
To qualify for the rebate, homeowners must provide:
- Physical address of the property
- Property geocode
- Amount of property taxes paid as shown on the 2024 property tax bill
- Names and social security numbers of the taxpayer and spouse (if applicable)
The Montana Department of Revenue has created online tools at getmyrebate.mt.gov to help homeowners gather this information, including a video demonstrating how to locate a property’s geocode.
“The fastest way to get your rebate is to apply online,” said Montana Department of Revenue Director Brendan Beatty. “Make sure to apply by the deadline of October 1.”
Homeowners can also apply using a paper form, but online applications are processed faster. The department will process claims as they are received.
Automatic Homestead Enrollment
Montana homeowners who successfully claim and receive a property tax rebate in 2025 may be automatically enrolled in the Homestead Rate for 2026, provided they did not move or change ownership during 2025.
The Homestead Rate established through House Bill 231 is a complex program creating tiered rates based on property values:
- 0.76% for properties valued at or below the state’s median residential value
- 0.9% for properties between the median and twice the median value
- 1.1% for properties between two and four times the median value
- 1.9% for properties valued at four times the median or higher
The program also includes substantial penalties for homeowners who provide false information—three times the tax difference plus interest.
Most homeowners who did not claim a rebate, moved, acquired a new residence, or were previously ineligible must separately apply for the Homestead Rate through the Montana Department of Revenue between December 1, 2025, and March 1, 2026.
“It’s critical that homeowners claim their rebate this year as you may be automatically enrolled into the lower Homestead Rate next year,” Gianforte said.
