MISSOULA — Montana seniors have one day left to register for the 2025 Montana Senior Olympics, with the deadline closing at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, August 23.

The three-day Olympic-style sports festival runs September 11-13 at various venues throughout Missoula, featuring more than 14 competitive events for athletes 50 and older. Registration costs $40 per participant plus $5 per event.

“The Montana Senior Olympics promote healthy lifestyles through the spirited competition of sports and education, while inspiring everyone to embrace health and enjoy the value of sports related exercise,” according to the organization’s mission statement.

This year’s games offer events ranging from traditional Olympic sports like swimming, track and field, and tennis to recreational activities including ballroom dancing, cornhole, and pickleball. Other competitions include badminton, beach volleyball, billiards, bowling, golf, horseshoes, powerwalking, 5K road race, and shuffleboard.

The Montana Senior Olympics moved permanently to Missoula in 2019 after changing locations several times since beginning in the 1980s. As a member of the National Senior Games Association, the event provides qualifying opportunities for the National Senior Games during even-numbered years.

Athletes compete in 11 age categories with no residency or prior experience requirements, earning gold, silver, and bronze medals. Participants range from recreational players to serious competitors seeking national qualification.

Pickleball competition runs all three days at Fort Missoula Regional Park, with new requirements this year mandating players note their skill ratings at registration. The tournament features men’s and women’s singles and doubles, plus mixed doubles, with the youngest player determining age brackets and the highest-skilled player determining competition level.

“Age brackets will be combined if there are not enough participants in any age group,” according to tournament organizers Wally Brakefield and Paige Berriochoa.

The games rely on local sponsorships, participant fees, and donations for financial support. Athletes must provide their own equipment for most events, though some sports provide standardized equipment like pickleball balls.

Registration remains open through Saturday night at www.montanaseniorolympics.com. Questions about the games can be directed to MSO Games Director Paige Berriochoa at [email protected] or 406-274-0224.

“There are no residency or prior experience requirements,” organizers emphasize, encouraging first-time participants to join Montana’s premier senior athletic competition.
