GREAT FALLS — A Malmstrom Air Force Base servicemember was honored this week with the state’s Spirit of Montana award for her exceptional work connecting the military installation with communities across central and eastern Montana.

Technical Sergeant Cassandra Hackley, who serves as Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of Wing Protocol for the 341st Missile Wing, received the recognition during a ceremony at the base. She manages high-profile events and builds relationships with community leaders, elected officials, tribal councils, and civic partners across Malmstrom’s nearly 14,000-square-mile missile complex.

“It’s my honor to recognize Technical Sergeant Hackley with the Spirit of Montana award for her exceptional service, leadership, and dedication to strengthening the bond between Malmstrom Air Force Base and communities across our state,” Governor Greg Gianforte said during the presentation. “I’m glad to thank her for her outstanding service to our nation and to Montana.”

In the last two years, Hackley has orchestrated 240 critical events, including orientations for members of Montana’s Congressional Delegation, visits from senior military leaders, and major ceremonies showcasing Malmstrom’s mission.

The governor presented Hackley with a certificate and flag flown over the State Capitol in her honor, reading a letter that outlined the reasons for her nomination.

“Your dedication and innovative problem-solving have earned recognition from senior Department of Defense leaders and strengthened Malmstrom’s role as a valued partner to the people of Montana,” Gianforte said in the letter. “You embody the qualities we hold dear – service, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to community.”

Malmstrom Air Force Base, home to the 341st Missile Wing, plays a critical role in America’s nuclear deterrent strategy, operating Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles across north-central Montana. The installation’s missile complex spans nearly 14,000 square miles across 11 counties, making strong community relationships essential for operations and security. The base employs thousands of military personnel and civilian contractors, making it one of the region’s largest employers.

The Spirit of Montana award recognizes Montanans for their accomplishments, dedication, or service. Community members may nominate individuals for the award through the governor’s website.
