HELENA — Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen joined election officials nationwide Tuesday in celebrating National Voter Registration Day, urging eligible Montanans to register or verify their registration status ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The annual observance, initiated in 2012, highlights the importance of civic participation in democracy. Jacobsen’s office is promoting the #VoteReady campaign through the state’s VoteMT.gov portal, which provides comprehensive voter resources and services.

“National Voter Registration Day reminds us all of the critical role civic engagement plays in shaping our communities, state, and country,” Jacobsen said. “The Montana Election Team urges eligible Montanans to take this significant step towards their civic duty by ensuring they are registered to vote.”

Montana voters can use the VoteMT.gov website to register, confirm their registration status, and prepare for upcoming elections. The portal allows users to verify that personal information including names and addresses are current and accurate.

For unregistered eligible Montanans, the state provides an online voter registration application that can be submitted to local county elections offices. Voters can also access sample ballots once they become available from their county elections office.

The registration push comes as Montana implements streamlined late registration procedures under Senate Bill 490, which passed earlier this year. The legislation clarifies deadlines for late voter registration in federal elections, allowing election administrators more time for verification while maintaining voter access.

Under the new law, voters can register late for federal elections until the close of business on Friday before the election, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday before the election, or prior to noon on election day. The changes provide clearer deadlines compared to previous requirements.

“Every eligible Montanan deserves to have their voice heard, and registering to vote is a crucial step in making that happen,” Jacobsen said. “On this National Voter Registration Day, I encourage Montanans to verify their voter registration information is current and accurate. Engaging in this important process ensures your participation not only in local elections but also in next year’s midterm elections.”

September is also designated as National Voter Registration Month, encouraging citizens nationwide to prepare for electoral participation.

Montana’s election administration has received national recognition this year for innovative programs that maintain accurate voter rolls. The state won the 2025 National Association of State Election Directors Innovators Award for a program that streamlines the removal of deceased voters from registration lists while supporting grieving families.

The Secretary of State’s office emphasizes the importance of early registration to avoid complications, particularly as Montana prepares for the 2026 midterm elections. Voters must request an absentee ballot to receive one by mail, making current registration status verification essential for those who plan to vote absentee.

Eligible Montanans can access voter registration materials and check their status at VoteMT.gov or contact their local county elections office for assistance.

“Thanks for voting, Montana,” Jacobsen said.
