GREAT FALLS — Montana Renewables has launched MaxSAF™, a blended sustainable aviation fuel that positions Great Falls as a key player in the emerging North American sustainable aviation market.
The company, one of only three sustainable aviation fuel producers operating at commercial scale in North America, has commissioned onsite blending and shipping facilities to offer a 50/50 blend of renewable and fossil jet fuel. The product meets ASTM certification standards and is compatible with existing aircraft systems.
Montana Renewables will initially distribute MaxSAF™ through AEG Fuels’ network to select aviation hubs in Montana, Washington, and Oregon, opening sustainable aviation fuel access beyond major airports.
“AEG Fuels is honored to collaborate with Montana Renewables on this landmark SAF inaugural blend,” said Landon Larson, Vice President, Supply NA at AEG Fuels. “Together, we’re demonstrating how strategic partnerships can accelerate the transition to sustainable aviation and deliver real value to operators across our fueling network.”
Agricultural Supply Chain Connection
The Great Falls facility converts agricultural byproducts from Pacific Northwest farm and ranch operations into aviation fuel. Montana Renewables processes tallow, distillers corn oil, canola oil, used cooking oil, and camelina oil into renewable transportation fuels with lower emissions compared to conventional fossil fuels.
The company describes the process as a “circular economy” approach that transforms agricultural waste into valuable aviation fuel, creating new revenue streams for regional farmers while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Economic Impact
Montana Renewables, located in Great Falls, produces sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel, renewable hydrogen, and renewable naphtha. According to the company^1, the operation offers high-paying jobs and career opportunities while supporting the local economy.
The MaxSAF™ distribution network allows Montana Renewables to serve local and regional markets directly from truck racks, expanding sustainable aviation fuel availability to smaller airports outside major aviation centers.
Montana Renewables operates as an unrestricted subsidiary of Calumet, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLMT), which manufactures specialty branded products and renewable fuels across twelve North American facilities.
