City Council to appoint Ward 3 representative after Ryan Hunter becomes mayor

KALISPELL — The City of Kalispell is accepting letters of interest from Ward 3 residents to fill a City Council seat that will become vacant when Ryan Hunter, who won the November mayoral race begins his term as mayor in January 2026.
The appointment offers an opportunity for citizens looking for a way to engage with local government and participate in decisions shaping Kalispell’s future.
Hunter, who currently represents Ward 3, is serving his second term as a city council member after beginning his first term in 2020. His move to the mayor’s office leaves two years remaining on his council term.
The mayor and City Council will review submissions and make an appointment in January 2026.
What’s Required
Ward 3 residents interested in serving as a nonpartisan council member must submit a letter of interest that includes:
- Name
- Address
- Contact phone and email
- Relevant experience
- A brief explanation of why they are interested in the position
- Signature
Per state law, candidates must be U.S. citizens and have established residency within Ward 3 for a minimum of 60 days. A map of Ward 3 boundaries is available on the city’s website.
Time Commitment
City Council meets most Mondays at 7 p.m. The position requires regular availability for council meetings and other occasional meetings as needed. Council members should expect to spend time reviewing materials weekly.
Applications are public records and will be publicly viewed.
