MANHATTAN, Mont. — What began as a dream in a small Montana town has grown into a thriving business that is making a real difference for those with dietary restrictions. Gluten-Free Prairie, founded by Rick and Deb Wheaton in 2012, was recently recognized at the 2025 Department of Commerce Made in Montana Tradeshow for its dedication to quality and innovation in the gluten-free food industry.

The Wheatons’ journey started when Deb, who has celiac disease, met Dr. David Sands, a professor at Montana State University. Sands had developed gluten-free oats that changed her life and inspired her to create products for others facing similar dietary challenges.

“In the gluten-free world, I’m my customer,” said Deb. “I think about what things I miss and my daughter, who’s also celiac—what do we miss? It was pancake mix or pizza. We started with a bag of oats and the Hunger Buster cookies, based on Rick’s grandmother’s recipe, and now you see our entire line of products.”

Growing with Community Support

From its humble beginnings, Gluten-Free Prairie has expanded its product line while maintaining a strong commitment to quality. The business has benefited from support from the Montana Department of Agriculture and the Department of Commerce, as well as grant opportunities that have helped it grow and thrive. The Wheaton family attributes their success to the strong community support in Montana.

“Montana is the last best place to start a small business. We couldn’t have done this anywhere else,” said Rick.

The annual Made in Montana Tradeshow provides an opportunity for businesses like Gluten-Free Prairie to showcase their products, reach new customers, and connect with fellow entrepreneurs. Despite unpredictable weather, the event continues to draw dedicated attendees year after year.

Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen congratulated the Wheatons on their recognition at the tradeshow, calling Gluten-Free Prairie “a great example of community entrepreneurship in Montana.”

“Rick and Deb Wheaton have turned their personal journey into a successful business that offers tasty gluten-free options and support for those with dietary restrictions,” said Jacobsen. “Their dedication to quality truly reflects the spirit of ‘Made in Montana.’”

More Than Just a Business—A Mission

For the Wheatons, Gluten-Free Prairie is about more than just selling products—it’s about making a difference in people’s lives. Customers frequently share stories about how the company’s gluten-free offerings have allowed them or their loved ones to enjoy foods they once had to give up.

“People refer people and trust us with that family member who has a gluten issue,” said Deb. “It means so much because it’s about more than starting a business—it’s about making a difference.”

As Gluten-Free Prairie continues to grow, the Wheaton family remains committed to providing high-quality gluten-free options while fostering a sense of community among those with dietary restrictions. Their journey from a personal struggle to a successful business serves as an inspiring example of Montana entrepreneurship at its best.
